Your to do list is never finished. There is a constant stream of things that need to be done and many of them are urgent. Why should you spend precious time getting involved in AI? Surely most of it is hype, pedalled by the AI companies themselves? Here are some reasons to get your hands dirty with AI.

The new AI systems, based on large language models, have grabbed the headlines. ChatGPT was launched in November 2022. Think of this type of AI as an efficient assistant. It can make you more productive and help you to market and sell more products or services.

Imagine solving problems faster, or using AI-driven analytics to understand your customers on a deeper level. It’s like having a team of experts working for you, who are always available to answer your questions in detail.

AI can streamline operations and improve efficiency. From decision making to data visualisation, from creative thinking to training, from admin to accounts, from sales to marketing, the possibilities are endless.

Perhaps the best reason to start using AI sooner rather than later is that your competitors are already learning how to use AI. In fact they are not just learning, they are implementing it. Most of their activity is hidden as they are saving money, becoming more productive and generating new ideas through the use of AI.

By starting to use AI, you will learn a great deal. The weird thing is that you can use services like ChatGPT to teach you about itself. For example, having created a free account, you could type in this question: ‘I am a [job title]. How can you help me to become more productive?’ The AI will list ways in which it can help you. You can then ask it to provide more detail.

By using the current version of an AI system such as ChatGPT, you will be prepared for when the next version launches. You will understand it on a much deeper level by having actually used it, than by reading about it.

Some people reading this article will think to themselves: ‘But I am already using ChatGPT / similar systems.’ If this is the case, questions would include how frequently are you using it? How many different parts of your business is it affecting? Are you aware of the safety and privacy issues? What is your approach to prompt engineering? Have you received any training in order to expand your understanding of what the AI can do? Is it making a significant difference to your business?

Perhaps the answer is to adopt a wait and see approach. After all, what’s the rush? Waiting for the next generation of AI to arrive will mean that you will have to start from scratch, without any hands on experience of what the software can do. What is more, many enterprises that adopt a wait and see approach, will probably always be waiting and watching. One day in the not too distant future, they will wake up and realise that they have missed the boat entirely.

AI has arrived and it works. The time to learn about it has arrived.
